Papers of John D. Rockefeller, Sr

Interesting, Professional look at Standard Oil Tycoon
At a price of over $1,000, I had expected a very interesting look at one of my faviorite industrialist genuises. J.D. Rockefeller Sr. is one of the most interesting Captians of Industry both personally and professionally I have seen in my life. These published papers of his were a deeper insight into his mind and how it worked. This most fascinating man had class, style, intelligence, and logic. I can tell by these papers that he is not only consevative but also not, contratry to popular belief, an ultra malterialist. He beleived he needed to surround himself with such riches and luxuries to "meet the social image of a man of my stature". These papers are a must for any "fan" of John D. Rockefeller Sr., founder of the Standard Oil Trust and richest, in most all respectes, man of his time.

finally i found the book which i was looking for
i found this book in a corner of a library of an Indian company where i used to work. With curiousity i picked it up. Until then i had no idea about the contents of the book. i started reading the book and experimenting on myself. it felt pleasurable. the way the matter is organized in the book with scientific results is just unbelievable. After reading the book i really felt that this is the right book to learn and experience the power of meditation and other mind healing techniques which empowers the brain. Though i read the book a number of times, i find something new everytime i read it. it helped me get rid of tensions of professional life.

The Presidency in Transition (Center for the Study of the Presidency Proceedings Series Vol VI No 1 1989)
Published in Hardcover by Center for Study of Presidency (February, 1989)
Authors: James P. Pfiffner and R. Gordon Hoxie
Average review score:

Essays Describing Issues Specific to the Presidency
This book consists of 35 essays which describe specific aspects of the presidency or the president's administration during times of the departure of one president and arrival of the next. The essays are written by those who witnessed the transition first hand or those who have studied the events.

The essays are organized by topic. For example, there are sections devoted to The White House, National Security and Foreign Policy Processes, Economy, Science, Congress, Vice-Presicency. Within each section there are several essays describing various historical events or recommendations for future transitioning officials.

The book is an interesting historical account but by nature of the essay format and subject, it can get a little dry.

I enjoyed the book during my first reading in 1989. I think back to some of the essays now which is what prompted me to look for an updated version. Great reading for historical accounts that are often glimpses behind the scenes. Not great reading for pure entertainment.

Reflections in a Glass Eye: Works from the International Center of Photography Collection
Published in Hardcover by Bulfinch Press (October, 1999)
Authors: Ellen Handy and International Center of Photography
Average review score:

A beautiful picture book.
This book, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the International Center of Photography, breaks from tradition by offering a new perspective on ICP's photograph collection that moves beyond photojournalism. The book illustrates the seldom-acknowledged diversity of ICP's photo collection. It is organized into sections such as landscapes, fashion and style, war and disaster with a few short essays by a number of essayists and critics. The book's negative points include the less than perfect color picures, and the absence of an index. Overall, the book is another great addition to the coffee table.

Religion, the Missing Dimension of Statecraft

Shows Christianity at work not reported by press.
Many examples of Christians working, such as in Eastern Germany just after the wall came down. Very surprising. These are instances not reported by the press of actions for which the Christians sought to avoid media attention.

Safer City Centers: Reviving the Public Realm
Published in Paperback by Paul Chapman Pub (April, 1997)
Authors: Taner Oc, Steven Tiesdell, and Tanner Oc
Average review score:

Contribution to the study of the fear of crime
The book "Safer City Centres: Reviving the Public Realm" provides an interesting read for both the general public and academics alike. By successfully appealing to these audiences, Taner Oc and Steven Tiesdell have made a significant contribution to the study of the fear of crime. Members of the general public can discover why the fear of crime is an issue of concern for both themselves and policy makers, whilst for academics the book is a useful introduction to the phenomena and how it is manifested in city centres.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the dynamic relationship between city centres and the people who use them.

Sentinel for Health: A History of the Centers for Disease Control
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (January, 1992)
Author: Elizabeth W. Etheridge
Average review score:

A History of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Etheridge's text tells an amazing tale of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from its inception during World War II to eradicate malaria in the American South to its present-day status as the leading authority on innumerable infectious diseases throughout the world. Through her writing, it is possible to understand how the CDC was created and evolved, subject not only to the need to respond to health problems across the globe, but also to political and domestic pressures from within.

The Sioux Uprising in Minnesota, 1862 : Jacob Nix's Eyewitness History
Published in Paperback by German Amer Center & Indiana (June, 1994)
Authors: Jacob Nix, Gretchen Steinhauser, Don Heinrich Tolzmann, Eberhard Reichmann, Max Kade German-American Center, and D. H. Tolzmann
Average review score:

A good "first hand" account of a tragic war.
This is a good reference book for anyone studying the Sioux Uprising (Dakota War) of 1862.

Mr Nix was one of the settlers from a small town in Minnesota called New Ulm. Mr. Nix and other New Ulmers succesfully defended their city against two separate Indian attacks during the height of this war (he was shot twice, but survived.)

The English portion of this book was translated from the original German document written in the late 1800's, so the verbage is a little dated. The author still had strong prejudices against the Native Americans when he wrote this testimonial, and frequently refers to them as "Red Devils" and "Red Scoundrels." This book is hardly objective.

This is a good glimpse at one man's viewpoint of the war, but should be examined as just that, one man's viewpoint.
